The Powerhouse Vineyard is located at the very northern end of Potter Valley which is the next valley east after Redwood Valley in Mendocino County. It is a small valley bordered in all four directions by mountains. Across the mountains to the north is the Eel River, to the east is Lake Pilsbury, and south is Lake Mendocino. The east fork of the Russian River flows south through Potter Valley into Lake Mendocino. Spring frosts put this area on the edge of being able to grow grapes. Spring frosts are severe and abundant right up until June and Fall frosts can begin at harvest time because the valley is bordered on all sides by mountains and there is nowhere for the cold night air to drain to, hence the frost. Summer days can be extremely hot with temperatures frequently in the 100’s. Nightime reverts back to cold with a daily drop in temperature of around 50 degrees. The vineyard is certified organic. Natural fertilizers are used to support the health of the vine. Irrigation water comes from a diversion directly off the East Fork of the Russian River which flows through the middle of the vineyard.
