The Pena Creek Vineyard is located in the Dry Creek Valley Appelation of Sonoma County near the town of Healdsburg. It is a remote vineyard with 8.5 miles of dirt road and four gates to pass through before you reach it! Set in the middle of oak and madrone forests spotted with large stands of redwoods the beauty of the area is really quite rare. At 1100 feet of elevation with vines located only on steep terraces it is a physical workout to climb the vineyard. But worth it!
Pena Creek is a large tributary of Dry Creek with protected salmon runs coming via the Russian River. It borders the vineyard on the southeast side and provides water and refreshment for the vineyard and its workers. It is much hotter here than in the Russian River area to the south. Because of the elevation, fog is limited to early morning and late evening. The day is often its hottest at 10AM! A nice breeze picks up in the afternoon to help cool the grapes. This combination provides for the classic Dry Creek cherry flavors in Zinfandel.
The vines are trained in a vertically upright position to allow maximum sunlight penetration to the berries. Irrigation is used to support the vines health on the well drained, steep, dry soils. Only organic practices are utilized: foliar fertilizers such as the Biodynamic preparations and sea kelp solutions are applied to promote the health of the vines and decrease the amount of sulfur needed.
